What is behind the dike, is that the water or the village?

Whether it's windy or beautiful summer weather; on the dike it is always an experience. The elements have free play there, you feel insignificant and part of the larger whole at the same time. Makkum has a unique location on the IJsselmeer with a direct connection to the Wadden Sea. Many tourists and water sports enthusiasts come to Makkum via the Afsluitdijk or sail through the locks across the Wadden Sea to the islands.
But also Makkumers themselves and the many tourists who visit Makkum like to come to our 'Achterdijkje'. In the summer it is wonderful to relax, with a view over the water and the harbor. On balmy summer evenings, you can complete it with a picnic blanket and some goodies to watch the sun go down. Frisian romance at its best!
The dike is a great source of inspiration for us with its views, characteristic structures, the combination of the water and the village and of course the well-known swing gate as the gateway to this special part of Makkum.
For water sports magazine Deining we have recorded this in a series "de Dijk", which can also be purchased as wall decoration or outdoor cushion. Would you like to see what that looks like? Then take a look at food bar Pand1738 on the Plein in Makkum. Just like on the dike, it is wonderful to relax there and then you can leave the picnic basket at home.
As our loyal followers know, we like to work in black and white. This not only creates a timeless atmosphere, but above all it does justice to the essence of the image. As an example again the swing gate, because its structure is raw and fascinating; recognizable without being fully visible. An image that you can enjoy for a long time, that only gets more beautiful over the years, just like the swing gate itself.
Anyone who takes a good look around Makkum, with an eye for detail, will be able to marvel at its beauty for a long time. And that does not only apply to Makkum, but to the many (coastal) places in our province: Where the water touches the buildings.
